How to Reply to a GST Notice

What the common GST notices mean, how long you have, and how to respond without making things worse

First, Do Not Panic, But Do Not Ignore It

Most GST notices are triggered automatically by data mismatches: between your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, between the credit you claimed and what appears in GSTR-2B, or between GST and income tax figures. Many can be resolved with a clear reconciliation and a short reply. The danger is missing the deadline, because the officer can then decide against you.

Common GST Notices and What They Mean

FormWhat it meansTypical response time
REG-03The officer needs clarification or documents for your registration application7 working days
REG-17Show cause notice for cancellation of registration, often for non-filing of returns7 working days
ASMT-10Discrepancies found during scrutiny of your returnsAs stated in the notice, usually 30 days
DRC-01APre-notice intimation of tax the officer believes is payableAs stated in the notice
DRC-01Summary of a show cause notice demanding tax, interest and penaltyAs stated in the notice, usually 30 days
GSTR-3ANotice to file returns you have not filed15 days

Always check the exact deadline printed on your notice; the times above are only a guide.

How to Reply, Step by Step

  1. Read the notice carefully: note the form, the period, the amount and the deadline.
  2. Reconcile: compare your books with GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B for the period to find the source of the difference.
  3. Decide your position: accept and pay what is genuinely due (often with lower penalty if paid early), or explain why the officer's figures are wrong.
  4. Prepare the reply: a clear explanation with reconciliations, invoices and other evidence.
  5. File on the portal: submit the reply in the correct form against the notice, before the deadline, and save the acknowledgement.
  6. Follow up: attend any personal hearing and track the notice until it is closed.

Common Causes and How to Prevent Them

  • Excess input tax credit: claiming credit not shown in GSTR-2B. Reconcile every month before filing GSTR-3B.
  • Outward supply mismatch: sales in GSTR-1 different from GSTR-3B. Use the same books for both.
  • Non-filing: leads to GSTR-3A and cancellation. File even nil returns on time.
  • E-way bill gaps: goods movements not matching reported sales.

Our GST return filing service includes these reconciliations every month, which prevents most notices in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my GST notice?

GST notices are issued on the GST portal. Log in and check Services > User Services > View Notices and Orders, and for registration-related notices, View Additional Notices/Orders. A copy is usually also emailed to your registered email address.

What happens if I do not reply to a GST notice?

The officer can decide the matter without your side: a registration application can be rejected, a registration cancelled, or tax, interest and penalty confirmed against you in an order. Replying on time, even to ask for more time, is always better.

Can I ask for more time to reply?

For many notices you can request an adjournment or extension through the portal or a written request, giving reasons. Extensions are at the officer's discretion, so apply before the deadline.

My registration was cancelled for not filing returns. Can it be restored?

Yes. You can apply for revocation of cancellation after filing all pending returns and paying the tax, interest and late fees due, within the time allowed after the cancellation order.

Do I need to visit the GST office?

Usually not. Most replies are filed online on the GST portal. If a personal hearing is fixed, it may be attended in person or by an authorised representative.
